Write for your customers

Just like your website, your blog is for your customers, so write for them. Whether you help them solve a problem, provide fresh information or update them on a new offer or competition, give them something they will find useful and will want to read and then act on.

Find your style
Whether you’re a vet, tree surgeon or designer, find a tone of voice and writing style that reflects what you do and stick to it. Use plain English, steer clear of industry jargon and write between 400 and 500 words per post. It is also a good idea to include images so either take your own photo or use from sites like Pexels, but add the necessary credit.

Keywords
When you are writing content, do consider your ‘keywords’ as they help search engines find your site. For example, a graphic designer might use design, creative, graphics and images as their keywords and these will be used consistently in blog posts as part of the natural flow of the text. Blogging allows you to connect and engage with existing clients and reach out to new ones. Asking readers questions at the end of your posts is one way of engaging with them, and if they do comment, reply and start a conversation – you never know where it might lead.

Become an expert
Where better to be an expert in your field than on your blog? If your posts are providing valuable, authoritative information, people will come back and in time you will become a “go to” guru. Not only does this give you credibility in your field but it can also generate PR and networking opportunities all of which can be the start of new business leads and client success.

Share the love
When you publish a new blog post, you create something other people can share, especially if you add it to your social feeds. Once your post is up, your readers can email it to others, Tweet it, add it to Facebook and talk about it, so make sure your writing is worth shouting about.
