National Apprenticeship Week runs from 9 – 13 March 2015.
In response to a recent SME Insider article relating to ‘growing talent’, here at Face for Business we fully believe that talent can be nurtured and developed ‘on the job’, which is why we have an apprenticeship programme that we are committed too. We urge other employers to consider using the scheme, as the benefits are paramount.
Investing in our staff
Last Summer we made the move to employ our first apprentice. Why? Because we believe in investing in our staff, and we felt passionate about being able to provide employment, locally. Our apprentice, Roisin, has been with us since June 2014 and has become an integral member of our expanding team.
Real world challenges
We believe that gaining good work experience enables apprentices to be faced with challenges in the real world, with the benefit of having experienced colleagues on hand to advise and provide encouragement. We ensure that Roisin is supported in every aspect of her role, and are constantly on hand to develop her interpersonal skills, as well assisting her with the essential skills that working in an office involves.

Roisin is well on her way to achieving her NVQ qualification in Business Administration, under Intraining, Ormskirk. Intraining is part of the Newcastle College Group.
Roisin has monthly meetings with her assessor, Will, which ensures that she is meeting all the targets that are set. In fact, she has exceeded her expectations and will shortly be progressing to a Higher Level Apprenticeship.
Roisin’s assessor, Will says “Since Roisin started her Apprenticeship I have observed her develop a wide range of skills, and she now supports a variety of business support activities – from accounts to customer engagement. She consistently produces work that is of an exemplary standard, and I am looking forward to seeing Roisin progress onto a Higher Level Apprenticeship which will stretch her capabilities and provide further development. It is clear to see the value that Roisin brings to FFB.”
Roisin’s comments “The reason why I chose to apply for an apprenticeship as opposed to University is because I wanted to learn new skills through on the job training as I believed this would be much more valuable to me. The apprenticeship has helped me to develop professionally by gaining experience in a range of areas, including accountancy systems and customer service, while also helping me to develop personal skills. An apprenticeship was definitely the right path for me and I’m looking forward to developing my abilities further”.
Telephone answering service apprentice
Andy MacGregor, Managing Director of Face for Business believes in investing time and money into apprenticeships, and it was his idea to reach out to the local apprenticeship scheme in Ormskirk. He says “Roisin really has become an integral member of our telephone answering service. She is bright and more than capable of any task she is set. She takes full responsibility for ensuring that her deadlines are met, and uses her customer service skills to fully support the PAs here at FFB. Not only that, she keeps our accountancy system up to date, and is conscientious and consistent in her approach to her work. She is a delight to work with”.
Andy sees the apprentice scheme as a “Win – Win”
Any apprentices with Face for Business will benefit from a role paying £10,000 starting salary, amongst a good team with a structured development path to the permanent role with the opportunity to increase their wages every six months as they grow over a three year period. Our full time PA’s get £16,000 per year plus bonuses.
Team of the future!
Face for Business, as a company, recruits people we can mould and develop into our team of the future. We hope that in three years’ time our recruitment will mainly be fulfilled by the apprentices already within the business. Those apprentices will understand our business, customers and systems inside out and will return any investment from us.
