Brexit, the recent General Election, a rise in inflation and fall in the pound are all reasons to make us worry about our businesses and the future.  However, life goes on and if you do work for yourself, success is there for the taking but you have to go out and grab it with both hands.

Arabella Gtx, Exeter Baby Activities, said, “For success to happen you need to turn up and be consistent. Structure your time and have fun”.

Samantha Bowen, Hip-Pose, added, ‘Be true to yourself, always try to understand the customer’s point of view and if you set up business in something you love or are passionate about, you will work even harder for success!”

Sarah Anne Groom, Reflexology Devon, believes, “The sky is not the limit your mind is, so when you hit a glass ceiling…. smash it open.”

Bearing these words of wisdom in mind, rather than shutting up shop for fear of failure, it’s time to get out there and make things happen.

So, what does Face for Business consider as the secrets of business success?

Get it right from the word go
Whether you’re a sole trader, involved in a partnership or want to set up a limited company, get things right from the start. From your accounting and advertising to legal requirements and taxes, having everything above board is vital. The Government’s website is a good place to start if you aren’t 100% sure what is required.

Have a plan
A business plan helps you map out the road ahead, gives you a timeline for activities, is a plan for your finances and lets you look to the future. Keep it flexible, and if you haven’t written a plan before, the Federation of Small Businesses is a great place to start.

Don’t give anything away
You don’t expect a basket of groceries for free so don’t give your offerings away for nothing. Yes, offer loyalty cards, discounts and offers, but be confident in your products and services and charge a fair price for a great service.

Don’t sweat the small stuff
No one can do it all, so look at where you can outsource some areas of your business. Yes, it might involve a cost, but investing in an accountant, PR consultant or call answering service means you can focus on the big picture rather than stressing about what’s happening behind the scenes.

Face for Business has proven to be an invaluable partner to Modello, particularly during the busy periods of our Event Management process. For us, it is imperative that all of our calls are captured and managed professionally and this is where Face For Business excels. – Modello Event Management

Don’t rest on your laurels
As we have seen in the recent General Election, becoming complacent about your position in the market place can be a risk. At any time another hairdresser could appear on the High Street, a different vet could set up in the town or a solicitor could open a new branch, so you need to be at the top of your game to compete. Keep up to date with training, communicate with your client base, offer competitive rates and build a reputation based on trust and value. You may also want to do some work on ‘finding your niche’. What can you do or offer that differentiates you from your competitors? Maybe it’s perfect packaging or family run franchises – whatever it may be shout about it and stand out from the crowd!

Network locally
We know it can be hard to walk into a room of strangers, but if you network on a regular basis you will be walking into a room of friends. Face to face networking isn’t just about new business, it also helps get you known in the local area, builds your connections and gives you an invaluable support network. In fact, if you’re still unsure about networking, read our blog containing very useful advice.

Be visible online
If you’re not online, you’re missing out. Having a website and a social media presence will help raise the profile of your business, allow you to engage with existing and potential clients and give you a whole new window of trading opportunity. Finally, take some advice from Heidi Spalding of Story Box Media, who said, “If you want to succeed, you have to believe in yourself and your business because if you don’t, you can’t expect others to either”.
